Countertop water filters: what the certifications actually cover
"NSF certified" sounds simple, but a certification covers specific contaminants, not everything a brand lists. Here's how to check.
| Filter | Price | Type | What we found |
|---|---|---|---|
| AquaTru Classic | $475 | Countertop reverse osmosis | Brand states IAPMO certification to NSF/ANSI 58, 42, 53, 401 (not yet checked in the directory by us) |
| Waterdrop K19-S | Discontinued (listed at $309 when checked) | Countertop reverse osmosis | IAPMO file W-17249 lists it under NSF/ANSI 58 for TDS reduction only; other contaminant claims are brand-commissioned lab tests (as reported by TapWaterData) |
| Clearly Filtered pitcher | $110 | Gravity pitcher (not RO) | Lab reports not reviewed yet |
How to check a certification yourself
- Find the certifier named on the box (NSF, IAPMO, WQA).
- Search the model number in that certifier's public directory (e.g. IAPMO listings, NSF listings).
- Read the "reduction claims" column. Only those contaminants are certified.
- Anything else marked "tested by a third-party lab" was tested on the brand's order, not certified.
Your local water report tells you what's actually in your water; start there.
